Amira Ashraf Ismail Obaid

From an early age, I have been captivated by the intricacies of the human body and the remarkable ability of doctors to heal even the most severe injuries. Growing up in Gaza, where war and devastation are daily realities, I witnessed firsthand the urgent need for skilled and compassionate medical professionals. My father, a devoted surgeon, became my greatest inspiration. I watched him work tirelessly to save lives, often under the most challenging circumstances. His unwavering dedication and selflessness sparked a deep passion within me—medicine was not just a career choice, but a calling to serve my people.
However, my path to becoming a doctor has been fraught with obstacles. In my third year of medical school, war erupted, forcing my family and me to flee Gaza. The university I had worked so hard to attend became inaccessible, and my education came to a sudden halt. We left behind everything—our home, our community, and my father’s pharmacy, which was destroyed in the attacks. As refugees in Egypt, I found myself struggling to adapt to an unfamiliar environment while grappling with an uncertain future. With my father’s source of income gone, even affording basic necessities became a daily challenge, let alone continuing my medical education.

Despite these hardships, I refused to let my dream slip away. I began volunteering with organizations dedicated to supporting Palestinian refugees, offering my time to help others who, like me, had lost everything. Through this work, I discovered a renewed sense of purpose. It reinforced my belief that being a doctor is not solely about academic achievement—it is about resilience, compassion, and a commitment to service. However, without financial assistance, my aspiration of completing medical school and returning to help rebuild Gaza’s healthcare system remains uncertain.
A scholarship would be transformative. It would allow me to concentrate on my studies without the constant burden of financial insecurity. More importantly, it would be an investment not only in my future but in the future of my people. Gaza’s healthcare system is in dire need of skilled professionals, and I am determined to return and contribute to its recovery. With the education and training I receive; I plan to provide free medical care to those who cannot afford it and support organizations that offer life-saving surgeries to those in need.

A moment that continues to fuel my determination occurred while I was shadowing doctors in Gaza’s emergency rooms. A young boy, severely injured in an airstrike, was rushed in with life-threatening wounds. The doctors fought to stabilize him, but the lack of medical supplies made every decision a desperate one. That night, I realized I could not stand idly by while my people suffered I needed to be part of the solution. That realization has carried me through my struggles and continues to drive me forward.
Your support would not only help me achieve my dream but would also empower me to bring hope and healing to those who need it most. With the generosity of donors, I can complete my education and become the doctor that Gaza so urgently needs.
